Post Christmas-First ever St Stephen's Day sales

Doors to some of the largest department stores in the country opened at 10am for the first ever St Stephen's Day sales.

Dozens of bargain hunters camped out in freezing temperatures overnight to get their hands on some of the specials on offer.

One woman queued for 22 hours outside Arnotts on Henry Street in Dublin.

Advertisement Dublin Chamber of Commerce says that by close of trading this evening there will have been a strong turn-out of shoppers and it could even exceed last year's figures because of shops opening a day earlier.

The chamber says there appears to be a return of consumer confidence based on the number of shoppers in the run up to Christmas.

In Northern Ireland, the sales have been given an impetus by shoppers hoping to buy less expensive furniture and white goods. Bargain hunters are seeking to make their purchases before VAT rates in the North rise from fifteen to seventeen-and-a half-per-cent on New Year's Day.
